How it works

Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet (inches รท 12) to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards, which is how bulk mulch is sold. For bags, divide the cubic feet by the bag size and round up.

Cubic yards = length (ft) ร— width (ft) ร— depth (in) รท 12 รท 27

Worked example

A 20 ร— 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep is 200 sq ft ร— 0.25 ft = 50 cubic feet = 1.85 cubic yards, or 25 bags of 2 cu ft. A round bed 8 ft across at 3 inches is 12.6 cubic feet, or 7 bags.
